It wasn't customary for Lapann Alphas to fight for sport. Omegas might - to prove their strength and try to attract mates - but Alphas had evolved to be smaller and faster. They used these traits to hunt and provide for the cluster, while their Omegas stood guard over the home and kits. Jau had, however, taken up the hobby at the shipyards in his previous life. Any reservations that his cluster mates may have harbored for his unusually violent hobby had disappeared long ago. They hadn't had the luxury of adhering to the classic designation stereotypes after all, not when Jau already had the skills and money was tight.

Roz had fought a few times, early in their exile, but betting odds always shifted to favor him. Their cluster made exponentially more profit, however, when Jau stepped into the ring. The presumed disadvantages of his missing eye and smaller size meant that he was usually underestimated by bookies and opponents alike. He found it sweet that, despite his obvious prowess for defense, his protective Omega still insisted on standing watch in the corridor. Jau cheek-marked his mate before ducking into the promoter’s familiar, cluttered office.

The air inside was thick with haze, the cool clouds of vapor that were omnipresent around Rama. Anyone looking for the beleaguered fight organizer at an event needed only to follow that fruit-scented fog, hard at work obscuring Rama’s complex crown of bifurcating horns. In the enclosed space of the office the effect was too much - cloying, overwhelming - but Jau just twitched his nose and attempted to suppress his disdain. Had he sensed the Lapann’s discomfort, Rama would have doubled down on his constant vaping, if for no other reason than to deter Jau from bothering him.

"Hey, Rama!" Jau grinned cheerily, twitching an ear.

"I thought I told you to stay away from me." Rama didn't look up from his desk display, but shook his head mournfully at Jau's voice.

"Rama. Buddy." Jau clicked his tongue, admonishing. He ducked as one of his ears brushed the myriad strands of tiny, tinkling bells that laced the low ceiling. It was one of the many reasons Roz preferred to wait in the corridor - the poor guy would have ended up tangled as soon as he stepped through the door.

"What did I tell you last time, you Lapann menace? Nobody here is going to fight you anymore. Healing vats are too expensive since the blockade went up." Rama finally looked up from his desktop to level Jau with a glare and a deep sigh of regret.

There was a good reason that Jau went to Rama to set fights, even if it was a less than noble one. When options were limited Rama would book whatever fight he could, regardless if the same match would have been barred in a more regulated (or even slightly more ethical) port of call. Refusing to book a fight - no matter how dangerous or ill-advised - would have been tantamount to sacrilege for Rama.
